The Queen's Scottish fandom line up to meet her on Edinburgh's Royal Mile

Hundreds of people flocked to Edinburgh’s Royal Mile for a chance to speak to the Queen as she attended a church service.

The monarch and the Duke of Edinburgh stopped at the Canongate Kirk during their week-long visit to the country – a traditional period in which she carries out her royal engagements in the country.

Wearing a cornflour blue jacket with matching ribboned hat, the Queen spoke to members of the public who presented her with bouquets of flowers after the service.

During her first major address since the UK voted for Brexit, she stressed the need for political leaders to make ”room for quiet thinking and contemplation” to deal with developments in a ”fast-moving world”.

The royal week of engagements celebrates Scottish culture, history and achievement and will include an Investiture and Garden Party at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
